Question by sweet shoota: What do most basic dog obedience classes teach? What do the trainers at petsmart teach your dog?
Are the classes worth the money or is it stuff that I can teach them myself?
Best answer:
Answer by S. M.
Its kinda worth it. They teach you (or the dog) sit, paw, roll over, bang bang your dead, stay, leave it, come here. And a few others. It was fun.

Question by ICYUNVME: Can I find a dog training schedule online?
I trained my basset hound with out a real tentative schedule but my pit bull needs more structured training, he does not have behavioral issues, and is generally a good dog, his issues include, jumping not sitting when told, barking out side, and so one. If any one knows of a planned training schedule online, that is like Day 1, do this, Day 2 do this, and so on and so forth.
Thanks,
B

Question by pilar: crate training?
this crate training business is pretty new. dogs and cats used to be the only pets not caged up and now it’s only cats. what gives? does anyone else find this unnecessary? my dog is a member of my family, albeit a slightly retarded member. i would not put any of my other family members in a crate for half the day either.
btw i trained my dog the regular way so that he does not tear up the house when i am gone. yes it took a little bit of time and effort but having a dog should take time and effort. also it is not very hard to potty train your dog.

No, but they probably wouldn’t go on the floor either. It really works. That is for house breaking reasons. Once this is accomplished, they can stay out all the time, just like the other members of your family.

Question by Cass: how do you stop your dog from chewing cords?
Our dog chews up cords to everything and everything else she finds laying around… Why does she do it? and how can we stop it?
Best answer:
Answer by Exotica
Wrap them up and keep them off the floor. There are cord protectors you can buy, or you will have to find a way to block them off completely otherwise.
A firm no helps, and when she stops, replace the wires with a toy of her own. Take up anything off the floor you don’t want chewed.
If she continues to chew the wires, rub a tiny bit of hot sauce on them to deter her.

I live in CT, and i need the names of some good puppy schools in CT, preferably Fairfield County. If anyone has one that is good, and reccommended. I have an 11 week old shiba puppy, and I really need to get him sociaized with other dogs, and need some training as well.

Petsmart provides training classes, and there are other dogs there, so socialization is one of many things you get out of it. It is $ 119 for eight classes, one class per week. I currently have my dog enrolled in some and he’s improving like crazy! Here’s the website if you’re interested- http://www.training.petsmart.com/
Best of luck!

i’ve never met a dog that needed to be taught that, much less a dobie. If you are good to the dogs, they will love you and protect your family and your home.

Question by Question_ Person90: At what age should you take your new puppy to obedience classes?
What is an appropriate age to take your puppy to puppy classes? When I get it, she will be 2 months. And, what Obedience Class would you recommend?
Best answer:
Answer by Loki ? Wolfchild
Most Puppy Kindergarten classes are open to puppies from 8 weeks old to 4 months old. You might want to wait until she’s had a least 2-3 sets of vaccinations.
I would certainly recommend a Puppy K class – excellent socialization for the puppy, as well as basic obedience, and dealing with puppy-specific problems (housebreaking, nipping/biting, etc.). Most local kennel clubs or dog training clubs offer these classes.
