Question by 2thedogs: Advice on crate training a fearful (crate-phobic) dog?
I have always crate trained my dogs with great sucess. My 6 yr old lab will run into her crate as soon as I even touch a kong and will sleep most nights in there on her own. I just rescued a lab/shepard mix. He is about 3 years old and gets tons of excersize. I have followed the same methods as with other dogs, meals in the crate, lots of treats and praise, etc. However he is still extremely fearful of the crate. I have been working on the positive association side of this for 10 days now and I feel like we have made no progress. As soon as he goes into the crate to get a treat he pops right back out and the one time I tried to shut the door he panicked and wouldn’t get near the thing for a day! I would really like to be able to reliably crate him for various reasons and have him trust the crate as a safe place. If anyone has any suggestions from experience they have had I would love to hear. I know the basics of crate training, looking for beyond the normal advice! Thanks

Question by dogluvr07: Best way to train dog to stay in yard without fence.?
I have a 11 month old lab and we was planning on putting a fence up so we could play with him outside and not have worry about him running off, but we don’t have the money for a fence now because our older dog has had a lot of medical problems and the vet bills have been expensive. What would be a good way to train him to stay in the yard, and of course we will not leave him out there by himself.
Just wanted to make sure everyone understands that I don’t plan on leaving my dog outside period by himself, I just wanted some suggestions for when I take him outside to play, and so I can have more room to train him better.

There is no reliable way to do so (including invisible fences). The dog will very likely get hit by a car and then you’d really have a big vet bill. I shadowed with a vet in a rural area where people just let their dogs roam and at least once a day, a dog would get brought in who was either shot, injured in a dog fight, or hit by a car. This is not Lassie or Old Yeller where the dog “knows” where to stay. I work with a local shelter as a volunteer and foster and they get strays in all the time with invisible fence collars on that failed, so that’s not a reliable route. If you want to play with him supervised, go to a pet supply store and buy a 30 foot long line (a long leash) and then just let him drag it around if you want to play ball or whatever. The dog doesn’t even notice the leash as it runs back and forth to fetch and that way you can always grab the leash if the dog decides to take off.
Edit: tie outs/chaining are not good for an unsupervised dog. If you want to do some yard work, that’s fine, but you cannot leave a dog on a tie out all day. It is cruel and will lead to a frustrated dog. Many dogs figure out how to get off them anyways and then go running off. Many fatal dog attacks are caused by tying a dog out and someone approaching it because they didn’t have a fenced yard. Just save up the money for a good 6 foot fence if you really must keep your dog outside unattended.

Have one person outside and one inside and encourage them to go through rewarding them when they do it. Worked for my dog and he was over 2 also. I did have to give him a push to get him going the first couple times then it was fine.

Question by Courtney E: Schutzhund training?
Are there breed restrictions for Schutzhund training? ex: just for shepherds? or can any trained dog do it?
Shes a pit, but i want to compete with her. shes very well trained in obedience but we want to do a sport. Shes not built for conformation classes, but we were thinking about agility. shes a little clumsy though.
Best answer:
Answer by ?Majestik moose© (?NO CHICKEN?)
there is no restrictions for training for fun/excercise.
there are some with competing, depending on the organization.
what breed to you have?
ADD: bullies being allowed to compete has been off and on for a while. they are, then suddenly(and usually, when they are out performing the other “regular schH breeds”) they aren’t anymore.
it also depends on the organization, and some trainers feel pit type dogs should not be trained in protection work, or sch, so they won’t work with them.
call up your states sch club, and go to a few events(no dog yet). talk to them.

Question by laynaNpatysmom: are there any free dog/puppy training web sites ????
hi everyone!
I was just wondering does anybody have any suggestions on how to train a 5 month pit bull to be calmer. he likes people way to much when I take him to petsmart he jumps on and licks everyone. he is doing good as far as all the other training and I socialize him well so its not like he is never around people he just loves to play !! is it because he is a puppy still? i cant afford training classes. I feel bad scolding him at the stores or any where else cuz people say ” oh he’s just a puppy. ” but I would think that’s the best way to stop it, when people are around.
any advice is wanted. if you know of a free website that would be nice too. And please no rude comments about pit bulls !!
sorry I forgot to add I dont want him nutered .

Question by julie(:: good ways to train dogs?
my family are thinking about getting a new puppy around summer time and we are thinking about getting an aussie or an APBT
(this wouldn’t be our first dog,but it would be our first puppy
i have had 3 dogs(im only 14)
and i trained my pit bull(he is full grown) with just treats(my mom helped though too)
and we had a yorkie we trained her the same way and my stepdad had a husky and he used toys to train his dog
what are good ways to train a dog other then treats that would be best for a pit bull or aussie?
dont worry we have a pit bull and we know about the breed and my family is experienced with them
and we looked up many breeds and thought an aussie would be best for our family
so we aren’t just getting a dog on looks or anything..so dont worry about that:)

You should use treats at FIRST, but then you need to start rewarding your puppy with petting and phrasing and yes, using toys. But if your always using treats, chances are with a puppy he wont listen to you unless you have a treat. So i say its better to: *phrase
*Pet
*Toys
*Walks
Things like interacting with him\her.

Question by Three 5 Mafia: What are the best puppy training books/methods?
I am getting a 10 week old female american eskimo dog. I need some good books on basic behavioral training, housebreaking, etc. I don’t want a method that uses treats as a means to train the dogs.
Also, how young should one start training a puppy?

First off do not listen to your parents or anyone else. Times have changed and the way to discipline and train animals has evolved with new training techniques and reward systems that work. Go to your neighbvorhood pet store and talk with other customers as alot of them are breeders trainers and overall experienced animal owners. ( not the typical 16 yr old with part time job) also it would be a good idea to go to a few sessions with your animal and see how he responds to what kind of training.

Question by PlasticTrees: Do you have any suggestions for house training dogs?
We took in a stray a month ago, and he and my other boy dog have to mark each other’s territory all day-even after coming inside from their walks. We got them both neutered today and I’m hoping this will help.
What are some good techniques that work? I’ve met people that have trained their dogs so that they NEVER go in the house, and they can just open the door and the dogs do their business and come back in w/out wandering off. I don’t know how they did it. Please help!
1 is a Rat Terrier Mix and 1 is a Mini Dachshund, both about 1 y/o.
