Potty Training Puppies When you work a full time job?

Question by racersgrl: Potty Training Puppies When you work a full time job?
I just bought two 10 week old puppies. I have experience potty training other dogs that I have owned but, I was not working a full time job then. I am looking for any tips that might help me potty train puppies that might fit my schedule. I leave for work at 6:30am and return at 4:30 pm. I don’t really want to crate train, only because I feel that is way to long for them to be locked in a cage. They are partially paper trained right now. They go pee on the paper but not poo. Any tips would be great!!! Right now I am taking them out twice before I leave work, and every 20 minutes after I get home until I go to bed. When I take them out they do go, but within a few minutes of coming back inside they run off to a corner and go again. I have even tried staying outside for a longer time.
In edition, for people that have negative posts to questions, maybe they should analyze themselfs, before saying something negative towards someone else. We all can’t sit at home all day and play on the computer!!

There is lots of great information you could find on the internet about this. Here is one site I recommend : http://www.wideopenebooks.com/Recommends/SitStayFetch.html

I hope you have great luck with your new puppies!

Who sold you two puppies when you work 10 hours a day? Good grief, I HATE BYBS!!!!!!!!

Potty training questions are asked on here dozens of times a day. You might want to utilize the ‘search’ function to find different ideas for your pups. However, chances are you will find that most of them require that the owner actually make time, something you obviously don’t have.

    Poor puppies.

Edit: Sweetie, I’ve analyzed myself and continue to on a daily basis. I know that working full time and 2 puppies just don’t mix. Funny that in all your self-analysis you didn’t come to this same conclusion. Shoot the messenger and insult them is always the first response of a guilty party. lol. Didn’t realize that answering a few questions a day while doing work and being home post-major surgery was worthy of insult – but I guess that anything is up for grabs with a dog neglector.

You’re right – what do I know? I only work with vet offices and dog rescue organizations. The number one reason for giving up dogs? Not enough time. And that usually is from people like you – people who did no homework, bought from BYBs or a pet shop, and then couldn’t handle the work involved. Those that don’t come to rescue willingly often end up neglected in backyards until they die or until confiscated by animal control. By that point, they are hard to adopt out because of the effect neglect has had on their personality, the illensses that come with being dumped outside or forced to live in a crate all day, and their age. Save me some work and give the pups back. You are not a proper home. No good rescue group would adopt to you and no good breeder would sell to you. This should tell you something.

Is there any particular reason you’re against crate training? It’s one of the most effective methods of training any dog. I’ve done it to both my beagles and they are so accustomed to it now that they actually look forward to spending time in their crate. As far as you being away from work for so long, is there any way you can come home for lunch? I did that when I was crate training them at first and it helped a lot. Good luck.

Crate Training is THE BEST WAY! Its is not cruel to leave your dog in cage all day, they arent gong to die. They arent like people who get bored and need entertainment as long as the cage is big enough for them but small enough where if the go in it they will be uncomfortable. I thought it would suck to keep my dog in his cage all day but now I open it to let him out after a day of being in there and he stays. Trust me dogs like their own space, they’ll whine at first but eventually they get use to the routine.

Where did you find a good breeder that would sell you 2 puppies when you work full time?? MISTAKE!
One is hard enough 2 is going to be a whole lot of work.. Are they both the same sex??

If they are going while you are outside and running back in and going again immediately.. Perhaps you are feeding them too much? Or hurrying them when you are outside?

You should hire someone to come in and let them out thru the day 10 weeks old is too young to be left that long every single day and expect to properly train them. Paper training them isn’t properly training them. You’ll never get them entirely and completely housetrained by paper training. Do they pee outside or inside?? Who knows, they are encouraged to do both. Forget the inside and train them to go outside..

Might want to consider returning 1 of the puppies.. If you were home all day, it would be one thing, but working full time.. Well something is going to suffer.

Crate training would be my recommendation, if you can get back home after about 4 hours to let them out briefly. Start taking them out every 15 min. Also, if they start to go, pick them up and hold them belly up (they will stop going) and take them to wherever they were supposed to go. You can actually train them to go on command, which is very handy. Start by saying “go potty” or whatever while they are going, and gradually move it forward to before they do it. In a year they will only be going when you ask them to.

I know the feeling… But you can’t avoid messes… unless you get a doggie sitter or take them to doggie daycare, you have no choice but to..

I know you said you are against crate training but it does not have to be permanent. I crate trained my dog when he was a puppy for potty purposes, and of course so he didn’t chew on things while I was gone. As he got older and could hold his bladder longer I left him for short periods of time alone outside the crate. Eventually I was able to completely leave him out and now I do not use a crate at all. The dog will not want to go potty where it has to stay all day so your puppies should learn very quickly. After I let him out of the crate I also confined him to one room. This way if he had an accident I would be able to find it easily and it wouldn’t be all over the house!! If you can keep the pups in a kitchen or something where the mess would be easy to clean up that would be helpful. Now my dog has the whole house to himself all day and does just fine. He has been home by himself for up to 12 hours and he has had no accidents! Goodluck with the pups!
