I want to learn dog psychology?

Question by Gustavo: I want to learn dog psychology?
I have an extreme passion for dogs and would like to learn more on training dogs using dog psychology as a profession. Any thoughts on what steps I should take to start a career in this field? I’ve tried applying at a canine center but I have no experience which is probably the reason I haven’t heard from them. I need help!
I have a dog and also watch The Dog Whisperer which has inspired me even more. Is there a course I can take?
Besides getting a degree, is there a certification course?

only on National Geographic Channel. Its all about dog psychology and controlling your dog’s behavior.

You want to be an animal behaviorist. That’s a college degree. That should help you narrow down your research.

If you’re truly serious, do a degree in Animal Behaviour. You can probably do it part-time at your local university. If it’s your first degree, you might be able to get grants, loans and bursaries to help with the costs (you certainly can in the UK, not 10% sure about anywhere else). Or maybe you could do a course online.
As for experience, maybe ask if you could shadow an animal psychologist for a day?

I don’t know your age or ability, but most shelters have volunteers to walk the dogs. A great way to get your foot in the door.
Also, as far as courses – call your local technical schools – or local dog trainers and volunteer as an assistant or a private shelter or rescue service

If U R serious then U will have no problems finding material to read. Get the “Dog Whispers” books and tapes. Cesar Milan also has a TV show that is popular. I have one of his books, and one of his sets of CDs. I was using his methods before he was even known. I did a lot of reading before I started training dogs. Reading is a great way to learn. Even if U read an entire book and only get one new idea out of that book, U have learned something worthwhile.

This is taught at universities that teach veterinary medicine.
